Harmony
Start from your music or generate a new direction.
Source mode accepts imported, drawn, or recorded MIDI. Scale mode starts from a chosen key and scale with adjustable tension and density.
- Track and channel filters isolate the intended MIDI material.
- Remove drums, Merge, Source Range, Snap, and Clean refine the source.
- Visible Harmony MIDI receives a best-fit key and scale analysis.
- Key or scale changes preserve timing, duration, velocity, and register as closely as possible.
- Four- or eight-bar guides are generated for the current output length.
Roles + Flows
Four roles. Four behaviors. One arrangement.
Each role maps its own timing and source material against the shared Harmony.
Chord
Polyphonic stabs, pads, comping, sustained movement, and chordal rhythm.
Bass
Low-register monophonic parts with bass-aware pitch choices and phrase support.
Riff
Hybrid mono/poly hooks, arpeggiated shapes, stabs, and rhythmic motifs.
Change the pitch without losing the rhythm.
Choose Contour, Exact, or Scale-fit pitch behavior. Generate a role-aware Flow, then use Revoice to change its pitches while preserving the visible events, repetition, phrase identity, and other roles.
Instrument sources
Generate the notes and hear the arrangement in one place.
Harmony and every role can host one instrument source.
SoundFont
Select patches and shape sample zones, envelope behavior, filtering, looping, stereo handling, and source effects.
Multisample
Load common SFZ region definitions and their referenced samples for playable multisample instruments.
Pitched sample
Set a root note, trim, loop, fade, process, and resample a WAV across MIDI pitches.
Hosted instrument
Host a VST3 instrument with state, MIDI channel, octave, gain, pan, and its native editor window.
Contraflow hosts VST3 instruments. General VST3 effects are not accepted as instrument sources.
DAW + performance
Synced when you need it. Playable when you want it.
- Follow DAW transport, tempo, position, and loop boundaries.
- Monitor live MIDI into the active or armed lane.
- Route DAW MIDI clips into Contraflow instrument sources.

Questions, answered
Before the first Flow.
Is it a MIDI generator, an instrument, or both?
Both. Contraflow can generate and route MIDI, while its instrument sources can play SF2, SFZ, pitched WAV, and hosted VST3 instruments.
Can I use my own MIDI?
Yes. Import, draw, or record Harmony MIDI. Role Flows can also come from imported, drawn, recorded, or generated material.
What is the difference between Harmony and Flow?
Harmony is the shared pitch reference. A Flow describes when a role moves and preserves its rhythmic identity while Contraflow maps it into Harmony-aware pitches.
Can Contraflow host any VST3 plugin?
No. Its hosting path accepts VST3 instruments. Effects and unreadable or failed plugin loads are rejected without replacing the current source.
